English: We begin the year with looking at persuasive texts and language techniques, persuasive writing, spelling, handwriting and literacy rotations. The second half of Term 1 we will be focusing on narratives, narrative writing, reading groups, comprehension, spelling and grammar.
Maths: Making mathematics more ‘alive’, more ‘realistic’ and more ‘accessible’ is very important. Therefore, Year 5/6 will be learning new concepts, engaging in hands on enjoyable activities and problem solving based on real world situations. This term year 5/6 will be focusing on Number and Algebra.
Science: Our focus in Term 1 will be on Making Changes. During this unit, year 5 will be investigating how Solids, liquids and gases have different observable properties and behave in different ways. Year 6 will be will be investigating changes to materials to see if they can be reversible, such as melting, freezing, evaporating; or irreversible, such as burning and rusting.
Religion: In Religion 5/6 are both focusing on the fertile question ‘How do people live their faith’? Students will partake in research of how people live their faith week to week and across the year in Christianity and Judaism.
HASS: 2016 introduced the combination of the previously separated history, geography, civics and citizenship and business and economics all into the one curriculum called Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS). The focus this term is on Migration and identifying the significance of an event/development, an individual and/or group has made to Australia.
HPE: This year Mr Murphy will be teaching Health and Physical Education teacher (as well as his role as APRE).
Technology: Technology curriculum includes both digital technology and design technology. Students will cover technology in a variety of ways in all learning areas throughout the year. This terms we will be looking at Digital Technology and explaining how the fundamentals of digital system components (hardware, software and networks) and how digital systems are connected to form networks.
The Arts: This Term year 5/6 will be focusing on how the elements of dance and production elements communicate meaning by comparing dances from different social, cultural and historical contexts, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance.
