Classroom Music

Prep

Students will learn to manipulate the voice between speaking and singing. They will listen, move and engage in musical play to explore and develop their understanding of beat. They will learn and sing a repertoire of songs of limited pitch range and will become aware of music as part of their everyday lives and as an important part of special celebrations.
 
Grade 1
 
Students will learn a repertoire of songs of limited pitch range and will work towards singing these in tune and in appropriate style, individually and with others. They will understand and respond to musical elements through singing, playing instruments, listening, improvising, and moving. Students will aurally and visually recognise, sing, play, read and write simple rhythmic and melodic patterns.
 
Grade 2
 
Students will learn a repertoire of songs of limited pitch range and will work towards singing these in tune and in appropriate style, individually and with others. They will understand and respond to a broader range of musical elements through singing, playing instruments, listening, improvising and moving and begin to use appropriate musical vocabulary to discuss their reactions to music. Students will aurally and visually recognise, sing, play, read and write rhythmic and melodic patterns containing Level 1 core content.
 
Grade 3
 
Students will learn a repertoire of songs of limited pitch range and will work towards singing these in tune and in appropriate style, individually and with others. They will understand and respond to a broader range of musical elements through singing, playing instruments, listening, improvising and moving and begin to use appropriate musical vocabulary to discuss their reactions to music. Students will aurally and visually recognise, sing, play, read and write rhythmic and melodic patterns containing Level 2 core content.
 
Grade 4 & Grade 5
 
Students will learn a varied repertoire of music that they will be able to aurally identify, sing and play in tune and in appropriate style, individually and with others. They will understand and respond to a broader range of musical elements through singing, playing instruments, listening, improvising and moving. They will discuss their ideas and responses to music that they hear and perform using appropriate musical vocabulary. Students will aurally and visually recognise, sing, play, read and write rhythmic and melodic patterns containing Level 3 core content.
 
Grade 6 
 
Students will learn a varied repertoire of music from a range of historical and cultural contexts that they will be able to aurally identify, sing and play in tune and in appropriate style, individually and with others. They will understand and respond to a broader range of musical elements through singing, playing instruments, listening, improvising and moving. They will discuss their ideas and responses to music that they hear and perform using appropriate musical vocabulary. Students will aurally and visually recognise, sing, play, read and write rhythmic and melodic patterns containing Level 4 core content and will also create their own music using patterns, elements and structures from Level 4 core content.
